This Was the poem that Timothy McVeigh gave to the warden as he was being led to the death chamber. I think it sums up the attitude of the "My way " theology. Dorthea Day penned a response from the Christian viewpoint. It follows.

Out of the light that dazzles me,
Bright as the sun from pole to pole,
I thank the God I know to be
For Christ the conqueror of my soul.

Since His the sway of circumstance,
I would not wince nor cry aloud.
Under that rule which men call chance
My head with joy is humbly bowed.

Beyond this place of sin and tears
That life with Him! And His the aid,
Despite the menace of the years,
Keeps, and shall keep me, unafraid.

I have no fear, though strait the gate,
He cleared from punishment the scroll.
Christ is the Master of my fate,
Christ is the Captain of my soul.

The election is getting closer! My suggestion: Let's all dye our hair to go with our political persuasion for the next couple weeks. Right now my hair is purple because I'm neither one. Vote in my poll at peoplepowergranny.blogspot.com, and let me know what color you would like to be in the next few weeks. And I would suggest it not be black or white!

I like it too. I read somewhere that this is the favorite poem of the British people, though that's probably exaggerating. Still, it's jolly, and if the right mood strikes - as it must have for you - sad too. Very British!

Michelle, this poem made me cry. I've read it before -- in a high school English or college poetry class, I forget which -- but I think I kinda rolled my eyes at it then. I must be getting older, cuz now I just teared right up. Thanks for posting.

Oooh-- this has always been one of my favorites. He uses such strong language that it gives me shivers.

It was great to find some good poetry without advertisements and other distractions. I like your taste and still have much, much more to read. You've inspired me to write my first sonnet at work today! I may hate it tomorrow, but so be it? Sonnet #1 is done and perhaps one day I will have written 129...

Thanks...
